Henrico Schools How to Help – Want to Help? The HCPS Department of Family and Community Engagement, along with the Department of Equity, Diversity and Opportunities, are joining forces to accept donations for Henrico families in need. Donations will serve students and families as supplemental food and supplies on weekends during the HCPS closure period for coronavirus.  According to the Search Institute, healthy, strong family relationships are foundational to young people’s growth, learning, and well being. Yet organizations across multiple sectors struggle to engage and partner with families.
Since our last conversation with Big Brothers Big Sisters, they have made efforts to connect with their Littles’ families through their first Keep Connected pilot program. Christa sits down with two program graduates along with their group facilitator to explore family relationship insights and the benefits to be gained when families come alongside each other to learn and grow. January is National Mentoring Month, and for over a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has helped children realize their potential and build their futures. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of America conference, themed Bigger Together, provided learning sessions, inspirational speakers, networking opportunities with other agencies, and a day-long immersion into the topic of diversity, inclusion, and equity. “The national conference provided a great opportunity to learn more about how BBBS Services can increase effectiveness and efficiency in fundraising and research-based mentoring initiatives. The diversity and inclusion immersion furthered our ideals to serve youth, families, volunteers, and donors who reflect our communities. Strategies are already being implemented to be more intentional in our efforts,” said Ann Rohde Payes, Executive Director. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a research-based and outcomes-oriented agency. The skills developed at the conference support implementing research-based fundraising programs by increasing individual giving in support of corporate giving, since more than 70% of contributions nationwide come from individuals. Additionally, BBBS Services has received new grants in support of evidence-based family engagement efforts as a result of skills learned at the conference. The Tyson Foods grant already influenced the number and quality of youth served by creating new opportunities for financial support. The conference allowed BBBS Services (VA) leadership to connect with fellow grantees and other agency leaders, national experts, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America team to support best practices in program development and execution, as well as fundraising. Big Brothers Big Sisters recognizes the unlimited potential in every kid. Big David and Little Marquis appeared on NBC12 On Your Side to demonstrate and explain how match specialists examine the passions and personalities of enrolled youth and volunteers to create meaningful friendships between a caring adult and a child with unignited potential. Matches bond on outings. Both David and Marquis love fishing, so they go almost every other time they meet. David also creates an amusement for science and math and learning within his Little. They use a science experiment kit, do homework, and sometimes they’ll read. Although David worked with kids for years, he joined the program because he saw the long-term impact one-to-one mentoring can have on on youth in our community. What he didn't expect was that Little Brother Marquis is actually teaching him– “He’s taught me about school, he’s taught me about different perspectives on how to look at different problems and find different solutions... I think we’ve both learned from each other and grown quite a bit.
